Today I have decided to get back on the horse. I have been slacking, but that is over. In the next couple days I will choose a race and get started. I have found a new workout parntner and a little spark. Posting here will keep me accountable to myself and my friends. No laughing at early numbers please.  It’s a little late for a resolution, but I will call it a challenge to myself to come back stronger and faster than I was before.

Yesterday I checked one off the bucket list, added another and had about 6 hrs to enjoy beautiful Macon GA. I know that I wanted to take this one slow but that doesn’t lessen my own desire to do better next time (read disappointment). This was a learning experience if I’ve ever had one.

The Swim

The water was a wetsuit legal 73 degrees so I put on my borrowed wetsuit the about 15 minutes before race start(thanks Ken)** see lesson 1. I finished the swim in 00:40:05 and transitioned in 2:47 **see lesson 2.

The Bike

I started the bike knowing that I had trained the most in this particular event. The “rolling hills” that the race preview described where only rolling because every hill just rolled into the next. It seemed uphill out and back.  About half way on the bike I had to eat a big slice of humble pie when I was passed by 2 40+ women in a 5 minute span. The well chiseled calf prominently displayed their age as they passed me. My training is now a higher priority than it was before. Thank you ladies wherever you are. As I pulled into transition 2 at 03:02:07 and transitioned in 2:04 I was right on schedule for my relaxed pace race.

The Run

My dad was waiting at the transition he asked how long for the run and I jokingly said 3hrs. I was not far from the truth. I started off on tired legs but they responded well happy to be off the bike. I made it through the first 2 miles at a respectable (for me) 10:00 min pace. I shuffled through until mile 5 when I died. I ate and drank well throughout the race and felt good afterward. That leaves one explanation for my fatigue …. under training.  I ran at a 15:00 minute pace and walked through aid stations to a 02:46:32 run and a n overall time of 06:33:32.

I did it and now it is time to start training for the next event. I need to work on my run and my endurance. There were some tough lessons but I need to learn and move on.

**lesson 1

I had already applied my body glide but I saw a couple guys applying body glide to their necks where the wetsuit closes. I took a mental note and will remember to do it next time because my wife thought I got a hickey from some girl and it really hurts.

**lesson 2

I forgot to put sunscreen in my transition bag and did not apply it with no race top and no sunscreen I hurt more today from the sunburn than the muscle soreness. I am going to buy a top and never again forget sunscreen.

I am proud that I can finally claim the title of triathlete.  I did my first tri at the Savannah Sprint Tri Series 2009 race #1. I finished 2nd in the Novice catagory by 16 seconds and 24th overall. I was passed by the Novice who beat me about .2 miles from the finish.  I had wind but no speed left to speak of.  I tried to hold his pace but cramped almost immidiately.  The swim was interesting because even thought I swam in high school I’ve never raced in open water. It felt pretty natural and I didn’t have any problems. I was disappointed with my 12 minute swim but I didn’t know how long at the time. The transistions were not as difficult as one would think. I just took my time and did what I needed to do. I had laid everthing out so it was cake. Great bike leg with a moving speed of 21 mph. I passed people the whole bike leg including people from the 2 waves ahead of me.  I was solidly in first of the novices after the bike. I was expecting to have no legs after the bike but I was able to hold a 7:35 pace almost the whole 5k. That’s only 30 seconds off my normal 5k pace. I held the lead in the division until the last quarter mile where I was passed. I couldn’t hold his pace and lost by 16 seconds.  I am not disappointed but rather motivated to improve and tackle the next one with some experience and viniger under my belt.
